Strawberry Hill History

Location: Refectory [Great Parlour]

1774 Description: Over the table hangs a hunting-horn, finely enamelled on one side in colours, on the other in chiaro scuro, with the history of saint Hubert. (5)

Sale Text: A singularly curious and beautiful Hunting Horn, finely enamelled on one side, in colours, representing Allegorical Figures, on the other in Chiaro Scuro, with the history of St. Hubert. It is of the rare Limoges enamel and perfectly unique. It is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable gems of this rare collection, and has been highly prized by the connoisseur.

Object History

Provenance: Said (by 1850) to have belonged to King Francis I of France, but with no early evidence; Horace Walpole paid £5.5.0; 1842, Strawberry Hill Sale, day 19, lot 48 bt Webb, Old Bond-str., £141.15.0; Hollingworth Magniac, Colworth, Bedfordshire;1892, July 2-4, Christie's, Magniac sale, lot 403, bt Henry Pfungst, £6,615; Rothschild Family; Rosenberg & Stiebel (this dealer originally had it on consignment from the Rothschild Family; [c.1953], Mr. and Mrs. Alastair Bradley Martin, loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Guennol Collection.
